Spring is here and the sun is finally shining!! Sadly, out on the farms, we’ve needed to replant some of the winter wheat as it was damaged by the rain over recent months. Thankfully, the rain has retreated for now – let’s hope I haven’t spoken too soon and that we have a better summer!
The fields are now slowly drying up and the first flowers of the oilseed rape crop are starting to emerge. My birthday is in May, and it always seems that the bright canary yellow flower of the oilseed rape plant comes out just in time for my birthday celebrations. Seeing them start to flower is a reminder that brighter days are coming.
As I write this, the Easter marquee is being erected and the team are busy with preparations. Sadly, this year we are unable to display the chicks hatching because of the disease risk from avian flu. Nevertheless, you’ll still be able to meet the lambs, calves, pigs and my favourite, the pygmy goats with their kids.
The event will be open 9.30am to 3.30pm daily between 12th and 27th April. Click here to find out more.
On-site, the two fields of sunflowers which we’ve planted for the last 5 years has been ploughed over ready to be planted in the next month. We look forward to welcoming visitors over the summer months to wander through the fields and enjoy the spectacle.
The four barn conversions at Wood End are now ready for sale, with the first already sold. For enquiries, please contact Black and Golds Estate Agents.
In my last update, I shared the news of our dog, Geoff, being unwell. A dog is a man/woman’s best friend and sadly, last week, we had to say goodbye to him. He had contracted lymphoma and after a short period of treatment, it was time. It’s weird how we get so attached to our pets, but I guess it’s because they give us nothing but unconditional love.
>Somebody said to me – if you lock your wife and dog in the boot of your car, leave them and return a week later, only one will be happy to see you: your dog, with their tail wagging.
We will treasure the time we had with him, and the memories created.
Until next time.
