Since we last spoke, the sunflower fields have been and gone. Sadly, the fields weren’t open for quite as long this year due to a shortened blooming period. Nevertheless, the fundraising effort from visitors and the local community was fantastic, raising a brilliant £2,603.48 for Help Harry Help Others, a local cancer support charity.
It looks like we’re in for a spell of dry weather, and as such, we may attempt to get the combine harvester into the fields to harvest the sunflower seeds. The main word there being “attempt” – the flowers are very wet, which could cause some troublesome blockages in the combine. All we can do is try!
After a mild start to autumn, we’re all planted up for next year, which is great news. We recently purchased a new sprayer for the farm – a second-hand, self-propelled, 36m-wide model. It’s relatively small but does the job we need!
At home, I’m continuing with my passion for cooking. I recently attempted a Tarte Tatin – it was a good enough effort but sadly, I didn’t let the caramel cool enough before adding my pastry top. I’ve since been informed by chefs that this is a rookie error, as the warm caramel draws the fat out of the pastry. It was nice enough, though, and I’ll try again with my newfound knowledge.
As I get older, I’m learning that life is all about the little wins. Ten years ago, when I built The Piggery, I installed a large fridge freezer. It’s always been very reliable and served me well – until recently! The ice and water dispenser had been playing up and, after numerous phone calls, the resounding message was that it had reached its shelf life. I didn’t want to give up and eventually found a man called John from J Refrigeration Ltd. John not only fixed the fridge freezer, but it only cost me £135! I’d highly recommend their services if you’re ever in need.
The barns at Wood End are now nearing completion and are being marketed by DM & Co Homes. Do contact the team there with any enquiries.
Most recently, I took a trip to Cornwall to celebrate passing my annual helicopter exam. We flew down and enjoyed a meal at a diversified farm business, which also boasted a fantastic view.
As we look forward to the final few months of the year, our events team are busy preparing for their upcoming Halloween event – Pumpkin Extravaganza. This year, the event will take place between 24th and 31st October. It’s proven to be a popular event with families, so advance booking is essential. You can find out more and book tickets here.
There are already hints of Christmas in the Farm Shop, with mince pies, Christmas puddings, and gifts galore lining the shelves. Our Restaurant team have also published their Festive Daytime Dining and Festive Afternoon Tea menus, which are available to book online now. Click here to find out more. We hope to see you soon.
Until next time.
