British Food Fortnight is taking place between 20th September and 6th October 2024. To celebrate great British food and fresh, seasonal produce, we are showcasing some classic British dishes.
This steak and ale pie is a comfort food classic. Use prime stewing steak and a top-quality ale to create a rich and tender pie filling and top with puff pastry. Serve with mashed potatoes, chips or boiled potatoes and some broccoli for a mouth-watering dinner.
Don’t forget to pick up a bottle of locally produced ale from our Farm Shop. We love using Worcestershire based Woodcote Brewing Company’s Oatmeal Stout.
Ready in: 1 hour 45 minutes
Serves: 4 – 6
Ingredients
900g stewing steak, diced
25g flour, plus extra for dusting
100g butter
2 onions, roughly chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3 carrots, diced
150g button mushrooms, whole or sliced if you prefer
2 sprigs fresh thyme
400ml Woodcote Brewing Company’s Oatmeal Stout
500ml beef stock
Salt and pepper
300g ready-rolled puff pastry
1 egg, beaten
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 220C.
2. Pour the flour into a large mixing bowl and season with salt and pepper. Stir through the stewing steak until fully coated.
3. Heat half the butter in a pan. Add the meat and sear until golden brown.
4. Next, add the vegetables, herbs, ale and stock. When simmering, cover and allow to simmer for 1 hour. When cooked, add the remaining butter and more seasoning if you wish. Stir well and transfer to an ovenproof dish.
5. Brush the edge of the dish with beaten egg. Place the pastry over the dish and pinch the edges until stuck. Trim any unwanted pastry from the sides. Brush the pastry top with the remaining egg and cut a steam hole. Place onto a baking tray and bake in the pre-heated oven for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
