At Becketts Farm we are always looking to support local and British suppliers. This British Food Fortnight 20th September – 6th October, we are celebrating all that is local and British. Read on for British food inspiration from around our Farm Shop. We’ll be serving daily ‘British’ themed specials in our Restaurant, check out the menu for this here! Plus, we’re running a prize draw to win some top-quality ingredients to create a delicious family meal for four. It’s a British classic pie dinner, with drinks, pud and cheese.
Great British Grub!
The food grown on our doorsteps really is the best starting point for creating delicious family meals for happy bellies and a happy planet too. We believe that fresh, seasonal ingredients are something worth shouting about. We stock not only the raw ingredients, but also products from a fantastic range of suppliers who have the same important values in their own production processes.
Hopefully, you’ll be inspired this fortnight to create your own truly British-produced meals and we thought we’d help you out with some ideas for your own kitchens and dining tables.
Breakfast Worth Waking Up For
When it comes to breakfast ingredients, we’ve got a few wonderful producers that you need to know about!
Starting with our very own Becketts Bakery Bread, produced here in our Farm Shop by our expert bakers. Our bakers bake through the early hours of the morning using traditional recipes. Whether bread for toast, or soft rolls for bacon sarnies, the bakery counter is the place to start. The flour in our bread is milled from British wheat at Matthews Cotswold Flour.
If you’re going for the full fry up, then you’ll find everything from British black pudding to free-range eggs and of course delicious bacon and sausages made using prime cuts of British pork. British-grown tomatoes and mushrooms will help complete the line up.
Happy Chucks Eggs based in Gloucestershire have been supplying us with eggs for eight years. We have huge confidence in this supplier to deliver us excellent quality and high welfare eggs, laid by happy chickens. Founded by Moira Wells and partner Tony Harding, free range and high quality graded eggs are key for this British business. However you like your eggs in the morning, these free-range beauties are top notch.
For a simple breakfast, we stock honey from three different producers.
Firstly, Solihull Apiaries Honey, lovingly harvested locally by Malcolm Taylor who began his beekeeping as a hobby, before deciding to bring his delicious product to us locals! Secondly, from Bee Loved Honey which is produced in Bromsgrove and won a Guild of Fine Food Great Taste Award in 2023! The bees forage on Worcestershire wildflowers, hedgerows and orchard blossoms. Across several apiaries they hand-harvest and extract honey direct from the honeycomb. They coordinate with farming and conservation communities to select prime sites where colonies can thrive. A multi-generational bee farming family, with over ten years of bee husbandry experience. Lastly, there’s Warwickshire based Arden Forest Honey, who are also Great Taste award-winning for their delicious raw and single origin honey.
Spread your local honey on some of freshly baked white bloomer bread for the most delicious breakfast. Or, add to porridge or granola with a handful of plump, local blueberries from Wye Valley Produce grown on Herefordshire soil.
Lunchtime Loveliness
For a light lunch idea, pick up a delicious Becketts Farmhouse Quiche, lovingly made by our Delicatessen team. Pair with crisp salad and a portion of our homemade Deli coleslaw.
Alternatively, make your own Ploughman’s using some of the artisan cheeses from the deli counter. When it comes to British cheese, we have some fantastic producers throughout Britain. Our Deli counter is proud to stock over 50 types of cheese. Keeping things local, we have a range from Croome Cuisine based on the outskirts of Worcester. Croome Cuisine source local ingredients where possible, introducing a wide range of flavours to cheese and smoking traditionally over oak logs. Delicious on a Ploughman’s is their superbly savoury cheese laced with Worcestershire Sauce and Shallots!
Fresh British salad items might be almost over for another year, but we couldn’t celebrate British Food Fortnight without mentioning R&L Holt Tomatoes based in Evesham. We’re very lucky to be just a stonesthrow away from the Vale of Evesham, which for centuries has been regarded as the fruit and vegetable basket of England. R&L Holt use some fascinating and sustainable methods, allowing them to grow and produce tomatoes all year round! Our greengrocers really trust them to deliver quality produce to our shelves.
Dinnertime!
Our butcher’s stock a wide range of meat, most sourced from within a 50-mile radius of our Farm Shop. A. E. Poxon & Sons supply us with excellent quality beef, the majority of which currently is from Herefordshire. You can always chat to our butchers about where your meat has come from, they’ll be glad to help. You’ll find plenty of inspiration on our recipe pages here on our website.
If you haven’t got the time to cook, then let the range of ready meals produced by Pegoty Hedge inspire you. Made here in Worcestershire, they use locally sourced and organic ingredients in all of their meals. They’re produce in small batches to traditional recipes, for truly comforting and mouth-watering meals with no corners cut, and no nasties.
