Steak and Caramelised Onion Sandwich

by Beth Crump

steak and caramelised onion sandwich

Up your sandwich game this British Sandwich Week by trying out our recipe for this ultimate steak and caramelised onion sandwich. Pick up a loaf of Becketts’ Bakery bloomer bread and generously fill with tender beef steak, caramelised onions, mustard, lettuce and tomato. This mouth-watering sandwich makes a brilliant lunchtime treat or mid-week evening meal.

Ready in:Β 1 hour 15 minutes

Makes: 2 sandwiches

Ingredients

300 – 350g beef steak, we recommend sirloin
Salt and pepper
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tomato, thickly sliced
Lettuce or rocket, to garnish
4 tsp Mrs Darlington’s English Mustard
Becketts’ Bakery loaf of your choice, we recommend a crusty bloomer

For the caramelised onions
2 medium sized onions, peeled and finely sliced
1.5 tbsp butter
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp balsamic vinegar

Method

First, make the caramelised onions. Melt the butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onions and stir until they are coated in butter. Place a lid (or baking tray) on the pan and leave to cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the lid and cook for a further 20 minutes until the onions are golden brown. Next add the sugar and vinegar along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook for a further 10 minutes until jammy then remove from the heat and keep warm.

Halfway through preparing the onions, take the steak out of the fridge and allow to rest at room temperature for 20 minutes. Season generously with salt and pepper.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over high heat and cook the steak to your liking. Transfer beef to a plate and cover gently with foil. Rest for around 5 minutes then slice thinly, against the grain.

Finally, prepare your sandwich. Spread the bottom piece of bread with mustard and top with the lettuce and tomato slices, followed by the steak and caramelised onion. You can spread the top piece of bread with mustard too, if you like or even toast our bread before preparing.
