On 28^th September the Becketts Farm Restaurant held its annual Great Becketts Bake Off for our Macmillan Coffee Morning. It’s amazing that every year we are able to eat cake, have a bit of fun and at the same time raise money for such an amazing charity.

There was a clear trend this year for flavours of lemon and chocolate mint with two chocolate mint gateaux entered. One baker tried to bribe our judges with a healthy dose of gin in her botanical lemon and gin drizzle cake… but unfortunately the real Prue Leith couldn’t be here, so the bribe failed to win them over.

The three judges were Managing Director Simon, Chef Chris and Sandwich Counter Assistant Lorna. Each took their time to score all 13 cakes for both presentation and taste – what a treat!

The winner was a unanimous decision, there could only be one – our very own Accounts Administrator, Chloe’s show-stopping Lindt Chocolate Brownies. With lots of talk from the judges about their rich, chocolatey gooeyness and Chef Chris saying he had never tasted a better brownie, Chloe was crowned star-baker 2018.

Two of our fabulous Restaurant waitresses came runners up, with Lottie’s beautifully baked, traditional Coffee and Walnut Cake and Annie’s Indulgent Chocolate Mint Gateau.

The cakes were sold in our coffee shop, plus we had a silly sweepstake and also donated £1 for every tea or coffee sold that day. Through all of this both staff and customers together raised an amazing £421.30 for Macmillan Cancer Support, beating our 2017 total by over £100! Thanks to everyone who took part and/or donated, we have made a real difference.
