Working close to the land we see the impact that pollution has on our environment. Therefore, at Becketts Farm we are committed to finding new ways to help reduce, reuse and recycle.
Farm Shop & Restaurant
In the Farm Shop we encourage people to reuse their old Becketts Farm Shop bags to prevent using new single use plastic bags. A 5p charge per plastic single use bag has been introduced, as government research has shown that imposing this reduces the amount used by 80%. The money raised by the 5p bag charge will be donated to local good causes and charities. Since we introduced the plastic bag charge, between 15th July and 15th August we have reduced the amount of plastic bags used by 65%. All the revenue from this goes to local environmental charities.
All packaging and materials onsite are recycled. The oil that is used in our Restaurant and any food waste is recycled by Olleco. The food is then recycled and through anaerobic digestion and is turned in to renewable energy, oil is turned in to biofuels. We have recently been awarded as a green business from Olleco. The Restaurant and Farm Shop also supports local farmers to try and reduce the number of food miles all ingredients and produce have travelled.
We also support local farmers and producers and source all our meat within 50 miles, here are just a few examples of our local produce;
Becketts Farm Honey – This is produced in Earlswood which is just 3 miles from our Farm Shop, so if you see a bee flying around its probably helping produce the honey for our Farm Shop.
Croome Cuisine – Croome Cuisine is an artisan cheese makers based in Worcester. They produce delicious cheese such as Worcestershire Honey and Fig, Worcestershire Hop and many more.
Purity Ales – Purity is a craft brewing company based in Warwickshire, producing 7 different types ofย craft beers made from sustainable and local ingredients.
In the Coffee Shop we have been running a Travel Cup Loyalty Scheme in order to cut back on the amount of single use plastic cups. Since starting in January 2017 we have saved over 1000 single use cups. For customers this means that, every time you bring the travel cup back to be refilled you will received 10% off every regular takeaway drink purchased, as well as helping the environment. Pick yours up in store for ยฃ6.50, we’ll even throw in the first drink for free.
Farm
The Farming side of the business helps the local environment by planting wild flowers over headland to encourage bees, Butterflies and other animals to the area. Last year we planted over 8 miles of headland, the flowers included borage, poppies, oxidaisies and sunflowers. This helps with crops as more pollination means higher chance of yield, as well as encouraging important plants and animals to the countryside that we farm.
Over the years Simon has planted a vast amount of trees and field margins to encourage new wildlife. When working with the land all wildlife is important, any way we can encourage this we will. We have an ongoing habitat project which will help keep the beautiful environment we know for the next generation.
We have many sites with solar panels on the buildings. On Heath Farm we have solar panels on our outbuildings, these produce on average 44,000 kw per year which goes towards our commitment towards the environment. This build alone generates enough electricity to power 4 homes per year with clean energy.
